What a summer it will be! Painkiller Heavy Music Magazine is proud to announce that with the combined effort of the Midi Festival, our own Yu Yang and the Chinese metal scene, we can bring Chinese metal to Wacken Open Air 2012 for the second time!

As part of the huge culture exchange project “Chinese Culture Year” in Germany, Beijing Midi School of Music and Midi Festival act on behalf and with support of Chinese Ministry of Culture, and send YaksaSuffocated and The Falling – the best three Chinese metal bands to this year’s Wacken Open Air Festival, the biggest metal festival on earth.

This Summer, August 2nd – 4th, the three Chinese bands will celebrate the biggest metal party together with over 100 famous bands such as Cradle Of Filth, Dimmu Borgir, Gamma Ray, In Flames, Machine Head, Ministry, Opeth, Overkill, The Scorpions, Sepultura, Suicide Silence, Testament, U.D.O. etc. The Painkiller staff will go and support the Chinese bands both as crew and tour management, with Yang Yu (Officer for Foreign Affairs both at Midi and Painkiller) will be present in the international Jury of Metal Battle as Chinese Judge.

Chinese metal on Wacken

So far as officially informed by the festival, show times of the Chinese bands are:

  • The Falling on W:E:T Stage 02-08-2012 16:40
  • Yaksa on Headbangers Stage 03.08.2012 11:30
  • Suffocated on Party Stage 04.08.2012 11:00

According to W.O.A., this year they will combine W:E:T and Headbangers into the world’s biggest stage tent. And the Party Stage still remains as part of the three main stages on site. For now the names of the Chinese bands are not updated to the official stage schedules yet, running orders and showtimes may still be re-arranged. But according to the current schedule, Yaksa will be sharing the stage with Hard Core hero HENRY ROLLINS and the infamous THE BLACK DAHLIA MURDER! Suffocated on the other hand will be opening for cult bands such as SUICIDE SILENCE, PARADISE LOST, SICK OF IT ALL etc. So congratulations to Chinese metal, these are oppurtinities hard to get even for European bands! And also, we wish The Falling all the best who will represent China on their competitions on the International Final Battle of “W.O.A. Metal Battle 2012″ and hope that they will gain their best achievement.

This is not the first time that Midi contributs to international festivals, last year Chinese bands to participate on the China Stage of the famouse Japanese rock festival Summer Sonic, on recommendation by Midi. Now for this Germany trip of the said Chinese metal bands, Midi Chief Mr. Zhang Fan said: “It is an honor to be entrusted to this project by the Chinese Ministry of Culture. Music education and international music culture exchange have always been the main focuses of Midi School of Music. We have the Midi Festival to introduce good oversea bands to the Chines audience, and the same time we also hope to help more Chinese bands to go aboard and showcase good music of Chinese rock bands to the world.”

In honour of Suffocated who are going to perform live tonight at Macau’s LMA, here are a couple of youtube videos showing you the thrash power that Suffocated has become in its long history. Suffocated started way back in 1996 and they are still considered as one of the strongest forces in Chinese metal!

Evocation was founded in 2004. Members at that time included Tomy (Guitar and vocal), Kei (Guitar), Lo (Bass) and Kin (Drum). The first performance Evocation participated in was the Punk+Metal+Hardcore Festival in 2004. Afterward, members of the band changed that Lazy (Drum) and Wing (Bass) joined and before Noah’s Ark Hong Kong Extreme, 2005, Wing left the band. Then Ming, the former bassist from Cadaver assisted in the performance. In 2006, Tai (Guitar) and BS (Keyboard, former Cadaver drummer) joined the band. Kei changed to playing bass. During this period, Evocation continued its performance and started to record its own album “Take Your Soul”. Then Lazy and Kei left the band. BS changed to playing keyboard and Chung (bass) joined the band. The current members of Evocation are: Tomy (Guitar and vocal), Tai (Guitar), Chung (Bassist) and BS (Drum).

Above is the song “Of Living and Dying” from Henan metalcore band Why Lazy, who have recently joined the CORE IN CHINA compilation project. This song was taken from the Resurrection of the Gods 7 compilation released by our sister company Mort Productions that also released Why Lazy’s EP Precipitation. Having been around for a couple of years, this band underwent a series of lineup changes until finally resting with the band members that perform the song above. Originally based in Zhengzhou Why Lazy have chosen to move to Beijing to be closer to the creative music scene and to have more opportunities to perform with some of the leading artists in the Chinese metal scene. Below are two photos of Why Lazy still performing in Zhengzhou:
